Water plays a key role in Swiss development Cooperation. For more than 40 years, SDC has supported partner countries in the development of their drinking water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and in strengthening their watershed management practices. Promoting an enabling political environment (policy and advocacy), leveraging partnership for large scaling-up, stimulating innovatives approaches, concepts and technologies and encouraging knowledge generation, management and exchange are key features of our work under the umbrella topic of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). More recently SDC has explored new fields such as water diplomacy and security and water economics.
SDC commits to work towards a water-secure world, where the population has the capacity to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of and acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development, for ensuring protection against water-borne pollution and water- related disasters, and for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability
The Global Programme Water Initiatives currently runs 45 operational projects and initiatives at bilateral and multilateral levels. Most of them have innovation and policy components. The Global Programme Water Initiatives with its 14 specialists acts as a centre of competence and maintains partnerships with academia, the public and private sector, civil society organizations.
